Forest elopement: Ty + Ryan
When first chatting with Ty and Ryan about their forest elopement, they only had one goal: have a good time with their friends. And to do so in the forest. :) As it happened with many couples in 2020, they opted for an intimate experience now and will celebrate a bigger day on the same date later on. They told us they love the look, feel and energy of the forest photos. So that's exactly what happened. The two of them, their adorable dog Pino and their friends hiked into the forest together for a beautiful sunlit ceremony.
Every time in the forest I'm in awe of how nature changes. And how the sun (or sometimes lack thereof) changes how everything looks. Even when in a location that we've photographed before, no two days are the same. For Ty and Ryan's elopement, the forest brought some magical light! And thanks to the amazing West Coast evergreen forests, even in fall the greens stay lush.
Kudos to the two of them for raising such a well behaved dog, btw! Pino did absolutely amazing during the ceremony and portraits. One of my favourite photos of the day includes a Pino photo bomb, haha, see if you can tell which one. ;)
Also kudos to Ty, Ryan and their friends for going down (and back up!) a pretty intense set of stairs (aka workout) to visit a different part of the forest.
Thank you so much for having us you two! We hope you're having a great start of 2021. :)

Intimate wedding at Queen Elizabeth Park: Taylor + Hayden
When writing this post I can only think of how happy I am that Taylor and Hayden got to celebrate their intimate wedding at Queen Elizabeth Park in September! Right now (December), everything is so much more limited because of Covid. And these two already had to give up too many plans.
Originally they planned to get married in Hawaii, but of course that couldn't happen. So they let go of the idea of a destination wedding and went for a local option instead: the Bloedel Conservatory. With the tropical plants, it was a location with a wink to Hawaii. Unfortunately the conservatory stopped hosting weddings too and so Taylor and Hayden ended up with wedding plan number 3: the Queen Elizabeth Park celebration pavilion.
They definitely endured extra wedding planning stress with all the Covid-19 changes, but despite all that, they remained positive and made it happen. Including the required extremely strict seating arrangement. I think that's a great start of their marriage! (Not the stress, lol, the fact that they coped so will together and just rolled with life's punches)
Regardless of the changes of plans, it's definitely fun that we explored the gardens with them, as both Taylor and Hayden work in landscape architecture. And the weather, despite the forecast, also cooperated and the sunset made everything extra beautiful. The evening felt like such a treat to us, especially with being less busy than usual. Couples that went ahead with their wedding in these Covid times will always have a special place in my heart! Love is not cancelled!
Thank you for having us guys! I hope you'll get to enjoy a lot more camping and hopefully that faraway travel can happen again in 2021!

Squamish elopement: Colleen + Spencer
Colleen and Spencer's elopement in Squamish was without doubt one of our favourite days in 2020. The two of them travelled to Squamish from the East Coast (which was totally A-ok in September, btw!). And they planned an unforgettable trip to the West Coast, including a helicopter elopement with just the two of them. We got to be there to be a part of it!
When we arrived in Squamish a while beforehand, we noticed there were quite a few clouds hanging over the mountains. An ominous sign for helicopter flights. But we didn't think too much of it and decided to enjoy a coffee before going to the meetup location. That's where we received a phone call from Spencer, saying that the helicopter might not take off. The weather could potentially clear up, but no guarantees.
No problem for us, as we come prepared with backup location ideas, but course we were rooting for them! We decided to meet the two of them and the officiant at the flight hangar anyways to get the final verdict of the pilot. And low and behold, as if some kind of miracle happened, 15 minutes before takeoff, the weather turned perfect!
Colleen and Spencer's ceremony had everything I loved in an elopement ceremony: beautiful vows, a good laugh and all the deep feelings. When Colleen pulled out her vows, Spencer couldn't stop laughing: it was a giant sheet of paper. ;)
After the ceremony, we explored the views with the two of them. The mountains in Squamish have such a unique vibe for an elopement. And when we get not only mountain views, but an epic rock- and glacier view and an amazing couple... spoiled photographers. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Nature inspires me so much! Luckily Colleen and Spencer were up for climbing up some hills and walking through the rock debris! After landing back in the valley, we spent some more time with them for portraits. We visited the beautiful Cheakamus River and a forest location.
Colleen and Spencer, you guys recharged our creative batteries and made it extra fun for us! ;) We'll invite ourselves over when the pandemic is over, lol, and you're always welcome here!

How the pandemic sped up our future dreams
As the year is slowly coming to an end, I have to admit that despite the 2020 craziness, a lot of amazing things happened. The pandemic created the perfect storm for some serious introspection. Jelger and I went from a busy schedule to nothing on the books practically overnight in March. Luckily from June on we picked up our cameras again and photographed several beautiful elopements and engagement sessions. But despite all of that, we had substantially more time off during the summer. And time off means time to think, ponder and wonder.
For years we've been talking about how important spending time in nature is to us. And we have a dream of actually living in nature, in a cabin in a remote location. We both felt strongly about this, but it was a far away future dream and one that seemed rather unattainable to be honest. However because of Covid and the extra time on our hands, we started looking at real estate websites again. Everything we saw was completely out of our budget. And then , after chatting with family, the idea of "why don't you do it on your own, step by step" came up.
The land
As it often seems to happen when we make decisions in our life, things randomly start to happen. Suddenly we came across a small piece of land in Horsefly, BC, that was within our budget. And in the exact area we were dreaming of. When I say small piece, it's 1.99 acres, which locals consider small out there. But for us city people, that's MASSIVE. Not to mention that behind it is kilometres of Crownland (aka endless backyard). So we decided to drive over and take a look ourselves. From there on everything happened super fast!
We arrived in Horsefly on the evening of August 8th, and decided to take a quick look at the land, before our appointment with the realtor on the 9th. When we first experienced it in person, the whole plan seemed mad. The entire plot was on a slope, with no road access to even drive on it. Not to mention it all being forest. But then the realtor, who randomly drove by, saw our car parked on the side of the road and came by to say hi. When we started talking with her, we slowly started to see more possibilities.
Because we're the kind of people that trust their gut, we decided right then and there to just go for it. We followed the realtor (she's fabulous btw, check out their website) to her office. She managed to get a hold of the seller. And boom, just like that everything was done and signed the same evening. Weeks later we found out someone else would have purchased it the day after if we hadn't snatched it away that evening. Speaking about lucky!

Developments
With the winter approaching quickly, we knew that if we wanted anything done on the land, it had to happen quickly! Winters are harder in the interior and with those cold temperatures, there wouldn't be any building/digging. But thanks to an awesome local team, we now have a driveway and a building platform!

What's next
Next up will be either drilling the well or getting electricity connected. Did I mention we purchased "a slope"? Lol. No water/electricity/sanitation/.... Hopefully that'll happen in 2021. Who knows! We try not to have too many expectations. But we'll continue to build bit by bit over the next years, until eventually we'll move out there and have a long commute for Vancouver weddings and shoots, lol. ;)
Thank you for joining us on this journey and know that every single one of our clients is helping us making this a reality! <3

And in case you'd like to elope with us in a truly wild environment, here are some photographs that show the rugged nature in Horsefly! ;)
Third Beach elopement: Jill + Chris
The Third Beach elopement of Jill and Chris makes me miss the summer! Warm summer evenings on the beach are the best! Especially when we get to photograph and witness a beautiful wedding ceremony.
This adventurous duo met in Australia while travelling and Chris, who is originally from Edinburgh, followed Jill back to Canada. Jill grew up in Edmonton, but the two of them live in Victoria now. With their love of camping and hiking, that seems like an excellent plan!
They decided on Vancouver to get married with just the two of them (and these two photographers as witnesses ;) ). And because they like nature a lot, Stanley Park and specifically Third Beach was the perfect spot! Jill and Chris decided to have a first look before the ceremony, because they got ready separately. Jill's taxi arrived late, which made the moment even more exciting for Chris, hehe. Good things come to those who wait! It all worked out perfectly (as it always does) and their first look was gorgeous.
We headed to the beach together and found a spot that provided some privacy. Because of the nice weather, we were definitely not alone, despite it being Tuesday. But there are always ways to carve out a little quiet spot and enjoy the ocean views.
After their heartfelt ceremony and photos on the beach, we headed to Gastown where the two of them had a romantic dinner reservation at DiBeppe, an Italian restaurant. And after taking a couple of photographs we left them to enjoy the rest of their evening.
Thank you so much for having us on your special day! We hope Covid doesn't mess up your world travel plans and that you get to enjoy exploring the globe together soon!

PS: Can you believe Jill ordered her dress online just shortly before the wedding? Talking about being adventurous, hehe, I absolutely love the way the light played with it.

Acadia beach couple photos: Michelle + Chris
Acadia Beach was on the top of Michelle and Chris' list for couple photo locations. It's always great when a place has a special meaning for our clients! After moving to Vancouver a couple of years ago, the two of them have lived in Kitsilano, where they love the nearby beaches. And Acadia Beach has the benefit of being right next to a beautiful stretch of forest on the other side of the road. The couple will move back to the East Coast at some point in the future, so they chose to go on this photo adventure to remember their time in Vancouver! We think that's a great idea! ;)
I actually should mention the three of them, because they brought their adorable dog Porter to the shoot! Yes, the name Porter comes from the beer, which both of them enjoy, hehe. Absolutely adorable. At the time of the shoot, they had her for 7 months, but you could tell she's already completely integrated in the family. :) Michelle and Chris told us that Includes the three of them loving camping together! They came prepared, btw, with a couple of friends that took care of Porter when photographing without her! This is a great tip for everyone wanting to bring their pet for photos. Bring your friends or drop your pet off, so you don't have to worry about them.
Thank you so much again for having us Michelle and Chris! We hope the remainder of your time in Vancouver will include a lot more camping, bbq-ing and fun with friends!

Winter elopement tips for Vancouver
It's that time of the year where couples start planning for the winter, so here are some winter elopement tips for Vancouver! An outdoor ceremony in winter comes with some challenges, but it's totally worth it!
It goes without saying that there's a big difference between a ceremony in the city versus one on top of the North Shore Mountains, but these tips are useful everywhere! The main challenge with winter is of course the cold and having suffered from hypothermia myself, I can tell you it's not a joke. This entire post will basically be about keeping warm, haha. ;)
1. Be responsible with timing
Unless you (and your guests) are all dressed up in layers and layers of clothing, there's a time limit to how long you will be able to be comfortably outside. The average temperature information of your location can be found online and gives you an indication of what to expect, but of course it can be colder (or warmer). Outdoor weddings are beautiful all year long, but consider not staying out for hours on end, unless you have ways to heat up like an indoor location, a warm car, a fire etc.

2. Consider the shoes you are wearing
You'd be surprised at the amount of times I've seen wedding couples in the snow wearing regular dressed shoes and even heels! It's something that is often forgotten. If you know there's going to be snow, I can highly recommend wearing warm boots. In regular shoes, your feet will be cold and wet in no time and you'll be uncomfortable. This will significantly impact how long you can stay outside. Would you stick your feet in wet ice for longer than 10-15 minutes? ;)
Even if it's not snowing, the shoes you wear have a big impact on your comfort in the cold.

3. Other clothing options to keep you warm
Leggings and/or thermal underwear are a great option. That includes long johns if you're wearing a suit! It'll be nice and warm.
Even if you don't want to wear a coat for your ceremony or photos: definitely bring one! You can wear it in between and warm up. And of course there are options like knit wraps, shawls and blankets. Etsy has a lot of inspiration!
Especially on the mountains, gloves will go a long way! You can find a pair that fits your outfit or wear them for those in between moments.

4. Items to bring for you (and your guests)
When we go hiking in the snow, our thermos with hot tea is a must. Nothing beats a steamy hot drink when you're outside in the cold. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate or ... mulled wine, hot cider? ;) so many great options! (* disclaimer, alcohol will actually cool you down faster, even though you'll notice it less, lol, so don't forgot about those layers!)
In case you don't have a venue (or a venue that doesn't provide this): a blanket for your guests during the ceremony is fantastic! This is the moment when they can't walk around or go elsewhere to keep warm. I love the Ikea fleece blankets, because they're so warm and affordable.
Hand warmers can be a quick fix for when it's getting uncomfortably cold!

5. Educate your guests about your winter elopement
While you might be prepared for your winter elopement, your guests might not fully grasp the idea of being outside and can potentially dress without keeping the cold in mind. We highly recommend sharing information with them beforehand about staying warm. The last thing you want is one of your guests having to leave early or be extremely uncomfortable because they're too cold.

6. Final winter elopement tip
As always the number one priority is you and your guests having a good time! So go with the flow and have fun! If the weather throws you a curveball: let go of your initial plans and be ok to change things up.

Squamish engagement photos: Setareh and Eliar
Squamish and the entire Sea to Sky area is one of our favourite places to hang out, so when Setareh and Eliar agreed on meeting us on one of the gorgeous beaches for their engagement photos, we were thrilled! The two of them love the nature in BC, so that was definitely a good call. The drive alone feels immediately like you're going on vacation, with the epic mountains and the impressive Howe Sound inlet.
Setareh and Eliar flew in from the East Coast in July. This way they could do a bit more in person wedding planning for next year, as well as Setareh making use of some downtime to finish her thesis! By the time our shoot came around, extra celebration was needed, because she just finished it! This deserves a big congratulations! If you've ever written one, you know the exhaustion of this process. (Both Jelger and I went through it and had the occasional nightmare for years after, lol.)
We loved spending time with the two of them. My favourite moment was when Setareh suggested she'd like to dip her feet in the water. Ehm, yes! And Eliar bravely joined her. Despite it being summer, the water was still very cold! But it's always worth it! This couple also conquered so many barnacles and sharp rocks on the beach and climbed out everywhere we thought was a good idea, hehe. ;)
Thank you so much for joining us on this adventure Setareh and Eliar! We can't wait to photograph your wedding next year!!

PS We're excited to work with Hasti from La Vista Events for their wedding! Not only is she the nicest person, she's also an absolute timeline master. :)

Helicopter proposal Vancouver: Kristina + Daniel
Today I have special treat for you: the beautiful helicopter proposal from Daniel to Kristina, who travelled through Vancouver together on a road trip vacation. Jelger and I occasionally photograph proposals, but for this one I was flying solo! Pun intended. ;) The reason why: because there was only room for one photographer in the helicopter, hehe. And I was the lucky one.
Daniel booked a flight with Sky Helicopters and brought an unsuspecting Kristina to the hanger for a flight. While she was certainly a bit confused about being dressed so nice, she didn't have a clue what was going on. Of course I needed a "background story" about me being in the helicopter. I pretended to work for Sky (they even gave me a T-shirt). And I was there to take photos for their social media. Sounds believable, right?
Sometimes helicopter proposals can be tricky, because the weather is a crucial factor as the pilot flies on sight! But that was not a problem on this day, because the sky was absolutely blue and gorgeous! Despite all the sunshine and it being the end of July, there was still quite a bit of snow in the mountains: beautiful! I love snow and when it's also nice and warm, that's an added bonus. The remote Pitt Meadows backcountry locations make sure that you have absolute privacy and the landscapes are amazing!
Once we landed, everything happened so fast! With only 30 minutes of landing time, after a short bit of exploring, Daniel went down on one knee and asked the question. Kristina said yes and the rest is history! They enjoyed a glass of champagne together and we took a couple more photographs. "Surprise, I'm actually here to photograph you! ;) "
I loved seeing that after their proposal day, these two went on and continued the adventuring throughout BC! Including a paragliding tour and more.
Thank you very much for trusting me with you proposal and I wish you guys all the best in the future!

Kitsilano elopement: Flora + Jack
Let me take you back to summer with this beautiful Kitsilano elopement. Flora and Jack love the Kitsilano area and chose it as the backdrop for their intimate wedding. They celebrated surrounded by their closest friends. The couple will throw a bigger party with family in the UK a later point in time. But Covid didn't get to spoil the fun and they decided to go ahead and create amazing memories in Vancouver first.
From the beginning when chatting with these two, they wanted it all to be about having a good time! And part of that is of course feeding your guests, hehe. They treated their friends on cake with champagne and authentic sausage rolls. Jack confessed he was a bit nervous the day before the wedding and to have a something to do, he hand made A LOT of sausage rolls. They looked amazing and everyone raved about them! And of course I love the moment when Jack and Flora fed each other a sausage roll. ;)
Another one of my favourite moment from their elopement, was when they were officially pronounced husband and wife. So much excitement! And as always I cherished the candid moments. (In case you're wondering what I mean with candid, I wrote a blog about all the different "candid" out there. check it out here!)
Thank you so much inviting us to your elopement guys! It meant a lot to join you during these crazy times. :)

Unique Vancouver elopement: Lisa + Dave
Lisa and Dave truly created a unique elopement in Vancouver! We photographed their engagement photos last year, fully expecting to photograph their wedding past June. But then Covid happened (booo!). At first the news hit hard, especially after planning for so long and with guests who planned to come from many different locations. But Lisa and Dave decided to keep their original date and get married in the company of their closest family.
Lisa included several things that referred to their original plan, such as having the first look on Granville Island, where their venue is. And such as keeping the beautiful jewel tones she had in mind for the theme in her bridal bouquet. All those things will still happen when the big party takes place, of course. ;)
And once the day was there, they were set on having a blast and going with the flow! One of my favourite moments was when they spontaneously danced at the docks on Granville Island, when a street musician played one of their favorite songs. And of course the forest ceremony, just incredibly beautiful and heartfelt. So special when Lisa's mom walked her down the aisle and Dave's face... heart full!
It's a Vancouver perk to be able to take photos in an industrial environment, followed by deep forest and then ending your elopement with a dinner with city vibes. ;) And it's not because you have a smaller event, that you can't take several hours and create a unique day!!
Thank you so much for having us on your intimate day Lisa and Dave! We can't wait for next one!

Intimate Hycroft Manor wedding: Amanda + Hamed
Amanda and Hamed's Hycroft Manor wedding was our first wedding after Covid-19 happened. The entire time we were both extremely excited to be at a wedding again! And I can't say enough good things about this fantastic duo.
They wanted to get married in Vancouver with their closest family and friends, before moving to the US later that month. So despite everything being a bit covid crazy, they just went for it! I love how they incorporated cute guests mask favours, together with a monogrammed bottle of hand sanitizer in the wedding. Way to embrace all the challenges and make it fun!
The couple also chose to have a beautiful Sofreh Aghd at the ceremony, to celebrate Hamed's Persian background. He told us his own wedding was the first Persian wedding he attended. How amazing is that, though! I love the idea of honouring your heritage and incorporating traditions in your own unique way.
The ceremony was live-streamed, so all the people that couldn't make it, were able to attend! Big shoutout to Shyah, who did an amazing job! Side note, it's definitely worth it to have a videographer take care of life streaming! Not only will you have pro video footage, the sound quality makes a huge difference for your guests too!
Afterwards we enjoyed a short stroll through the property for couple portraits. Hycroft Manor is such a beautiful and diverse environment! You could easily take photos there for hours. We mostly stayed outside because you know us, we are all about nature!. But we loved the green room too!
After that, we stayed for the cocktail hour, which included a fun game, I think I like this better than the shoe game, haha. See if you can find what I'm talking about below! ;) And this duo had no less than two live guitarists performing at different times. In short, it all added to the fun summer vibes. (Can you tell cocktail hour is my favourite part as a guest? lol)
Amanda and Hamed, thank you so much for having us! We enjoyed being a part of your wedding and wish you all the best with your US adventures!

Spanish Banks elopement: Chelsea + Mark
Chelsea and Mark provided us with a beautiful concept for their Spanish Banks elopement. They loved the big willow trees as a backdrop for their ceremony, but other than that we could go anywhere and have fun! :)
The two of them told us that because of Covid-19 they now both work at home doing visual FX and managed to complete an entire movie working from there. Very impressive! Jelger and I are convinced that if you can work from home as a couple, you've got things figured out in your relationship. It's a great pre-wedding test. ;)
This duo also drove all the way across Canada together from Nova Scotia. I'm inspired to try something similar when everything calms down again!
With both of their families living far away, a spontaneous elopement seemed like the perfect idea. We couldn't agree more. Spanish Banks offers a lot of options for an elopement and there’s always space on the beach. In this case because of the weather predictions of rain, we enjoyed a lot of privacy! Hardly any beachgoers walked by.
Thank you so much for having us Chelsea and Mark! We hope the travel bans lift soon, so you can enjoy more time in Memphis and that you're having an amazing summer!

PS: I added a couple of behind-the-scenes photos at the end. Most of the time I forget to take them, but not today! How do you like Jelger's big smile?

Behind the scenes
Always excited to be a witness! And kudos to officiant Linda Cohen for coming prepared with a giant bottle of hand sanitizer. I figured I'd include it in a couple of photos, because after all this would be the only sign of Covid-19 :). We are grateful for photographing outdoors!
And how would I take photos from faaaar away without Jelger telling our clients what to do. ;)

Brix & Mortar elopement: Vivien + Trevor
Trevor booked us for his and Vivien's Brix & Mortar elopement no longer than 4 days in advance! Talking about spontaneity, these two win and I love it! :) They decided to just go for it!
Their wedding ceremony, witnessed by only the closest family, took place in the beautiful glass-covered courtyard (no rain plans needed here!). Afterwards, we strolled through Yaletown with the two of them. Vivien seemed to know everyone, because passersby constantly greeted her! She used to work in a local store before and clearly people loved her. :) Trevor is an engineer who builds bridges way up North in British Columbia and he flew down before the wedding.
It wouldn't be Vancouver without greenery nearby. It's one of the things I personally appreciate so much about living here! The city aims to have a green space within a 5 minute walk for every resident. :) So we enjoyed spending a bit of time in an adorable little green park, before continuing our urban explorations.
Vivien and Trevor, thank you so much for having us! We hope you'll have many more super spontaneous fun moments in your married life!

Couple photos in North Vancouver: Evelyn + Alex
When looking at their couple photos in North Vancouver, you might think this duo feels familiar to you. And yes, that's right! Last Summer we photographed their beautiful wedding. We recently got to photograph their "engagement session" almost in time for their first wedding anniversary. ;)
It felt so good being out and about in nature again with great people! Especially after the long break because of Covid-19! We're so lucky to have so much beautiful nature close to the city with plenty of private spaces to ourselves. The people (and dogs!) that we encountered on the trails were very respectful.
During the last weeks of the lockdown, Jelger and I ventured out a bit more in nature. Our 425 square foot apartment felt a bit too much like a prison by then. ;) And while on one of those explorations, we came across an amazing location in North Vancouver that offered so much beauty! The river has a lot of beautiful access points and the forest features both deciduous and evergreen trees. Fun fact, part of this location used to be a landfill. Can you imagine that after seeing these photos? I'm glad Evelyn and Alex trusted our ideas and went along without seeing previous photos from this location.
Another funny side note, these two were definitely in better shape than we were after quarantine! Evelyn is a personal trainer (A great one too! Check out her work!) and even built her own sled for sled-pushing during the time when the gyms weren't accessible. ;) I definitely had to step it up, when walking uphill.
Thank you for having us take your couple photos Evelyn and Alex! This session meant a lot and we hope we can do it again sometimes!
