winter elopement in vancouver

Winter elopement in Vancouver: Kellen + Jeff

We started off our 2022 season with this winter elopement in Vancouver. Kellen and Jeff celebrated their wedding on New Year's day in what I can only describe as a magical snow landscape. :)

Jelger and I occasionally visit Pacific Spirit Park in UBC, but this time it looked like Narnia. What a fantastic location for a winter wedding ceremony! Despite the freezing cold, these two were all smiles! After their short but sweet ceremony and some forest portraits, we drove to a nearby beach.

Using the word cold for what we experienced on the beach is an understatement. The wind chilled everyone's bones and even with jackets, it felt hard to stay outside! Previously the forest protected us more from the elements. But Kellen and Jeff were determined! I absolutely love the look of the snow on the beach (definitely a first for me) and I'm glad they went for it!

There may have been a lot of talk about the warm and indoor activities for after our photo session. ;) And Kellen came prepared with hand warmers and leggings. Find a couple more tips here for your own elopement in the snow!

Thank you very much for starting 2022 with us you two! What a memorable day.

elopement in the snow

Elopement in the snow: Crystal + Sally

When Crystal and Sally first contacted us they had no idea they'd celebrate their elopement in the snow. We first chatted in January 2020 about their celebration that summer, but unfortunately the world had other plans. With everything shut down, it was impossible for the two of them to get married. Another postponement happened, but third time was the charm! Past Winter, Sally could fly over from Hong Kong to finally celebrate her and Crystal's wedding!

Even at that time, there were some new restrictions, but with a small group of friends and family, they made it happen! And what a day it was! Jelger and I have been photographing in Stanley Park for years and we've NEVER seen snow like this! It was a gorgeous winter wonderland and the most beautiful sunny day. :)

But before starting portraits, we briefly joined Crystal and Sally at their hotel room, where they helped each other to get ready. I absolutely loved the atmosphere in the room. They were so ready for the day! And there's something special about helping your partner get ready.

Next we ventured into the snow! This duo braved some COLD weather, but they were absolutely up for it. :) Enjoy these photos in the Lost Lagoon area of Stanley Park.

For the ceremony at Ferguson Point, we were joined by family, friends and furry guest of honour: Timber! ;) Sally's family couldn't be there in person, but they joined online and got to experience the beautiful ceremony in real time.

And at the end, we got to join the two of them for a few more freezing photos at the sea wall! :)

Thank you so much Crystal and Sally for having us as a part of your special day! And I really enjoyed seeing all your adventures in BC afterwards, hehe. Cheers to many more of those!

elopement at buntzen lake

Elopement at Buntzen Lake: Charlene + Luke

Last fall, we had the pleasure of photographing Charlene and Luke's elopement at Buntzen Lake. Buntzen Lake is without a doubt an amazing location and so Jelger and I have visited many times before. But as per usual, nature surprised us with some gorgeous new-to-us sights! While most of the forest is evergreen, some beautiful fall colours popped up in unexpected places. :) And the cover photo above is one of my all-time favourite moss photos, haha. (Yes, that's a thing!)

Luke and Charlene didn't meet up before their ceremony, so Luke saw her for the first time when her parents walked her down the aisle. Absolutely beautiful! They sealed the deal with a heartfelt ceremony. And afterwards they joined us for portraits in some different locations throughout the park. During their photo time, the two of them couldn't stop laughing and smiling. They were so giddy and excited, I absolutely loved it! Such fantastic energy! :)

After the photos, the two of them joined their family and friends for a fun dinner at the Boat House in Port Moody.

Thank you for having us as your wedding photographers Charlene and Luke!

Elopement at Buntzen Lake info

Wedding commissioner: Holly Genereux

Reception dinner: Boat House Restaurant in Port Moody

An important tip when planning your elopement at Buntzen Lake, is to make sure all your guests are aware of the fact that there is no cellphone reception in the area. As a consequence of this, some taxi drivers aren't able to process payment on the parking lot. So If you're arriving with a cab best to either bring cash or warn the driver beforehand so he can stop before the connection is lost.

Another more recent change, is that new parking restrictions will be implemented in the coming months. While parking remains free (and available in morning or afternoon time slots), they do require a reservation. So unfortunately that might mean this park will be less convenient to plan for in summer. (check the park website here for updates on parking)

Cleveland Dam elopement

Cleveland Dam elopement: Maria + Dean

I'm very excited to share Maria and Dean's Cleveland Dam elopement on the blog today! This duo met several years ago while traveling in Austrialia. They're both living in the UK and Maria is originally from Finland. With the two of them loving travel, Maria loving forests and Dean loving mountains, Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver spoke to them. And they made it official with us as their witnesses, yay!

When the day of the wedding arrived, the forecast called for rain, but mother nature changed her mind. We were treated to a gorgeous day! For the ceremony, Jelger and I had scouted a more hidden spot to give them some privacy and avoid interruptions. We loved everything about the ceremony! And afterwards we visited the more open areas for some photos with the epic North Shore Mountains in the background.

I loved how they added some fun personal touches, like the sunglasses they brought and their champagne toast! It's always a great reminder for anyone planning their elopement: you can do anything you like! :)

During the portrait time, we encountered a random couple that congratulated them and turned out to be Finnish as well! They had been married for 30 years and shared some stories. Sometimes it's truly a small world! What are the odds! When photographing outdoors in a public area, it's always an adventure and you never know who (or what!) you're going to meet.

After their elopement, Maria and Dean traveled through BC and enjoyed the beautiful nature. We're grateful we got to meet them and be part of their experience.

Cheers to many more adventurous travels!

dog in photos

8 tips for including your dog in photos

Whether it's on your wedding day or for your engagement session, here are 8 helpful tips for including your dog in photos!

1. Know your dog

You know your dog best! If they are rather anxious in social settings with new people, maybe your wedding ceremony might be too overwhelming if you have a lot of guests.

An engagement session, while much more low key, can also be stressful if it's a new environment (and new people). As much as we love dogs, we wouldn't want to force anything! So bring your dog if he or she loves to be social. :)

2. A friend to help out or an option to take a break

We generally recommend starting your engagement or wedding portrait session with photos that include your pooch. That way we can take photos without them afterwards and you no longer have to think about them. It definitely helps to have a friend or family member help out to take your dog after the photos.

Another option is for your dog to stay in your car. Of course this option is only viable for a short time. And only if they're comfortable in this environment and never in extreme weather.

3. Choice of location

There are several off leash locations in and around Vancouver. But of course there's just as many where you have to keep your puppy on a leash. If you're thinking about your wedding, check in with your venue if you have one!

There's absolutely no problem with either option, but it's something to keep in mind when planning your session.

4. Your dog and props

Bowties, suits, funky leashes... anything that floats your boat, we're on board! Just keep in mind that it might not work out. And that's ok. Some dogs get out of their outfits REAL fast, haha. ;) So while you can absolutely try, don't feel disappointed if you end up with a photo of your dog fighting his or her outfit instead.

5. Treats and bribery

Of course the word treat itself might help, haha. But experience taught us that only works for a very limited time. ;) In the busyness/hurry of getting ready for your session, it's something to easily forget. So we definitely recommend getting it ready beforehand. After all, who doesn't love to be bribed with snacks. (This works on photographers too.)

6. Going for a walk before the session

If your dog has a lot of energy, it's very helpful if you can walk him/her beforehand. That way some of that excitement has found a way out and maybe (just maybe ;) ) your doggo will be extra relaxed.

7. Leave no trace

In city parks you can find the occasional bags and plenty of garbage bins. But especially when visiting more remote locations, don't forget your poop bags! Same story as with the treats, it's easy to forget in a moment of excitement, so a good idea to have it ready in a convenient spot!

In case you're interested in the leave no trace principles, the idea is to leave a place the same way you found it. And with Vancouver's parks being so crowded, it's certainly nicer to not have to revert to stick and flick. ;)

8. Have fun!

And as always: have fun! No need to be overly worried about the outcome. Regardless of what happens, your dog's character will show! And definitely ask me about some funny dog events after your shoot, lol.

I hope this helped and bring your furry friend(s) along!

Whytecliff Park wedding

Whytecliff Park wedding: Amelia + Andrew

Amelia and Andrew planned their Whytecliff Park wedding in the morning, so they could hang out the entire day with family and friends afterwards. They planned a camping trip with everyone (about 20 guests). How fun is that! Especially with not seeing family for a very long time (thanks pandemic), that was such a great idea.

The two of them didn't want to see each other before the ceremony, so Andrew saw Amelia for the first time when she walked down the rocky aisle, to their ceremony spot that overlooked the Howe Sound. Talking about an epic spot! They chose it together and it was perfect. Amelia and Andrew met while working in outdoor education, in Switzerland. (in the same village I used to go skiing as a kid with my parents, haha, it's a small world sometimes) And they still love being outdoors and enjoying sports together. Whytecliff Park with it's rocks was a nod to rock climbing. And that while showing off the gorgeous BC nature of course.

After the ceremony we took the two of them away from their guests for couple portraits for a little bit. The park has such unique features and it's always fun to explore new parts. And their dog was the cutest!! Always love a pet appearance at a wedding, hehe. ;)

We left them with their family and guests at their picnic. They love Lucky's donuts (good taste) and had great coffee and pastries.

Thank you so much for having us Amelia and Andrew! We loved meeting you and your family and are happy everyone can travel again now!

intimate wedding at jericho beach

Intimate wedding at Jericho Beach: Bianca + Daniel

Bianca and Daniel invited us to photograph their intimate wedding at Jericho Beach last August. With her family in Australia and his in Mexico, this couple wanted to show the local Vancouver nature in their photos. The two of them also love skiing and biking, so a day in nature was key!

They opted to take photos in a couple of different areas, before meeting up with their guests at the beach for their ceremony and an epic sunset picnic!

First look and forest photos in UBC

After a beautiful first look, we ventured into Pacific Spirit Forest together. It's one of our favourite places in UBC, because the forest is just amazing! It made the perfect background for a salsa intermezzo! That's right, Bianca and Daniel met in Cuba on a salsa trip, so of course some salsa needed to happed! These two are GOOOOD! :)

Portraits and ceremony at Jericho Beach

If you're familiar with Jericho Beach, you know it's pretty large! So before the ceremony, we joined Bianca and Daniel at a different location on the beach, for more portraits. They didn't want to leave their guests for too long after the ceremony. The beach provided a totally different environment than the forest.

When it was time for the ceremony, everyone gathered around in a secluded spot. Accompanied by romantic guitar tunes, everyone got in the mood quickly. One of their friends made sure family at home could watch the ceremony life. My personal favourite moment is always the personal vows! They're just the best. The moment when every guest held the rings to make a wish for the couple, was also very special.

Wedding picnic and sunset photos at Jericho Beach

After the ceremony, it was time for their epic picnic. Epic in so many ways, haha, not only was the sunset breathtaking, the atmosphere was so warm and happy. And of course as Belgians (who love to eat) we noticed the impressive spread. ;)

We snuck out for a couple of quick sunset photos with Vancouver in the background, but quickly returned the couple to their guests. And that's where we left them. We walked away hearing the sound of the ocean, guitar music and laughter.

Thank you so much Bianca and Daniel for trusting us with your photography! We had a great time with you two and we hope you're still dancing a lot of salsa!

forest engagement photos

Forest engagement photos: Caroline + Tom

We met Caroline and Tom for their forest engagement photos in one of North Vancouver's most sought after parks: Lynn Canyon. It was a beautiful warm summer day and nature was truly showing off. The park had been partially closed for a long time, first due to Covid and later because of renewing the suspension bridge. So it was great to see everything back to normal! The suspension bridge certainly looked renewed. (That's probably important with over a million yearly visitors, lol)

Caroline and Tom are a playful duo with a very active lifestyle. They met each other through parcours. And no, those photos below aren't photoshopped, haha, real stunt work happening there. ;) Tom is a parcours pro and Caroline is also an athlete. With hiking as a hobby, the forest seemed a perfect backdrop for their engagement photos. Together we navigated through the forest and managed to avoid the crowds. We even had the suspension bridge to ourselves for a couple of photos. (a rare event!)

Thank you guys for the enthusiasm and the fun time! We can't wait to photograph your wedding in June!

vancouver-wedding-photographer-tanja

Are you considering your own forest engagement photos? Check out all of our galleries featuring forest spots here. It's not a secret that BC has amazing rain forests. And we're very lucky to have so many forests within a close distance of Vancouver.

If you're considering Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver, we highly recommend choosing a weekday outside of the tourist season. Generally July -August are the busiest months. And especially weekends are very busy in this area. Another option to avoid crowds is to opt for an extra early session. I'm not a morning person, but for photos, I'd be absolutely on board, hehe.

Contact us any time for more information about our engagement sessions!

Vancouver forest elopement

Vancouver forest elopement: Angela + Tanner

Last summer, Jelger and I witnessed and photographed the Vancouver forest elopement of Angela and Tanner. The two of them said their I do's on their 10 year dating anniversary! They've clearly already proven they can do life together after ten years, hehe. But I love that they chose to make it official too! Stanley Park was be an excellent choice for them, because of their love for nature and the forest. And of course it's conveniently close to the city when you're visiting.

The pandemic threw them a curveball, as it did with so many couples. But this duo also had to rearrange their honeymoon last minute. They planned on starting a trip in BC right after their wedding, but unfortunately the forest fires changed their initial plans. Luckily they were able to make the most of it anyways. And I'm grateful we didn't get smoke in Vancouver during their wedding.

I love how the two of them put effort into the little details. From the adorable little carpet, to their gorgeous dried flower, to a champagne toast: beautiful! Also kudos to Angela for doing her own makeup, I'm beyond impressed.

Thank you Angela and Tanner for having us as your witnesses and photographers! We enjoyed your amazing sense of humour (Belgians love dry humour, haha) and hearing about your Belgian beer adventures. Cheers to the next 10 years!

Golden Ears Park anniversary photos

Golden Ears Park anniversary photos: Negin + Saied

We joined Negin and Saied in Golden Ears Park for their 10 year wedding anniversary photos. I loved that Jelger and I also celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary this year. We could definitely relate to the festive feelings, hehe. Yay for 2011 wedding couples! And of course we think taking couple photos is an awesome way to have fun and create memories to look back at in another 10 years.

Before starting our photo session, we enjoyed hanging out together and enjoying the beautiful august weather. We also got to know them a bit better and learned how they moved here. It's no small feat to move countries as a couple: the two of them moved to Canada from Iran. I believe that if you can immigrate together and build a new life in a different country and culture, you can do anything together! When Jelger and I moved to Canada, we joined a number of forums and could definitely see that an immigration would make or break relationships within the first couple of years.

Negin and Saied love the beautiful local nature, so Golden Ears Park fit the bill perfectly. Every time we visit, we find some thing new to love about this park. The gorgeous lake with the mountains and the amazing rain forest.. yes please!

Thank you so much for the fun evening you two! Let's do this again in 10 years! ;)

intimate wedding in squamish

Intimate wedding in Squamish: Bri + Julien

Bri and Julien's intimate wedding in Squamish took place on a hot summer day. The two of them traveled to BC from New Brunswick for their elopement. Bri used to live in Victoria and her best friend currently lives in Vancouver, so BC worked out perfectly for them! And since the two of them love camping and adventuring together, of course they appreciate the local epic nature. :)

On the day of their wedding, we met up at the parking lot, separately, for their first look! And I should add they trusted us with the location, as they'd never visited this particular spot before. Extra adventurous, hehe. I LOVE how these two switched things around and started with sharing personal vows immediately after their first look. They wanted to start the official wedding ceremony part after sharing their deepest personal words. :)

After the ceremony, we explored the beautiful beach together and had a good time with them and their friends! How fun is that champagne spray photo?! No cameras were hurt in the making of that shot, lol. We also shortly hopped into a nearby forest for a bit of photo variety, always a good idea!

They told us that they would spent the evening going out for dinner together back in Vancouver and do some bar hopping. A perfect end to a relaxed go-with-the-flow wedding day! :)

Thank you Bri and Julien for trusting us with documenting your day! We hope you're having a fantastic holiday season right now!

City Hall wedding in Vancouver

City Hall wedding in Vancouver: Julie + Justin

Last summer, we photographed Julie and Justin's City Hall wedding in Vancouver! Despite photographing weddings in Vancouver for all these years, this was our first time in City Hall! Julie, who speaks French as her birth language, chose officiant Beth, from Young, Hip and Married because she's bilingual too. That way the French in the ceremony was real French (and not "sure, I can speak some French French"). Julie and Justin spoke their vows, accompanied by their daughter Lou. Adorable! :) And at the end of the ceremony, they rang the bell to make sure everyone in the building knew someone tied the knot!

I'm happy Julie and Justin opted for more outdoorsy photos too! On top of checking out the park around city Hall, we visited Spanish Banks together later in the day for photos around sunset. Kudos to the two of them for doing some serious stroller gymnastics, btw! I'm talking carrying it up and down the stairs and the beach. ;) Of course it was all worth it! I absolutely loved the dramatic sunlight on beach, just stunning! And the forest isn't far from the beach, so we visited that too.

Congratulations again Julie and Justin! We were honoured to be your witnesses and to be a part of your day!

City Hall wedding in Vancouver: more info

For the longest time, you couldn't marry City Hall in Vancouver, but since the pandemic, they introduced "Micro weddings". That means you can bring up to 20 people (photographers and officiant included. Keep in mind that this means you're basically "renting the room" (in this case the Council Chamber), as you still have to bring your own vendors. cheekye ranch wedding

Cheekye Ranch wedding: Mellisa + Peter

Mellisa and Peter's Cheekye Ranch wedding was the first wedding we photographed with a large wedding party since the beginning of the pandemic! Jelger and I loved experiencing a big outdoor celebration again. Just like in the good old days! ;) And these two had to make and change so many plans, it's fantastic that they ended up in Squamish and got to celebrate the entire weekend!

One of the great benefits of getting married at Cheekye Ranch is that your guests can camp there and that you can have a fun night the day before as well! Melissa told us she loves backpacking and camping, while Peter is more into glamping. Well, for the wedding the camping situation was definitely glamorous with a yurt for the two of them. :) Several of their guests came with different types of tents and campers. It's clear that the two of them planned everything with most of all their friends and family in mind. It truly was an experience and I'm sure everyone who attended thinks back fondly of their time together.

The wedding day was a hot one! The forest fires that happened in BC all summer definitely had an impact on the weather. They made everything feel extra toasty and smokey. And Peter just rocked his 3 piece suit during all of it! Very impressive. ;) But the beautiful surrounding mountains peeked through the haze for this duo. Jelger and I were also excited about the forest location at Cheekye Ranch, which is gorgeous!

When I looked backed at these photos for writing this blog post, I almost felt a bit nostalgic. Hot Summer nights and big parties? Ah, can we have those all year round please?

Thank you so much for trusting us with your memories Melissa and Peter!! We had a blast!

Hart House Restaurant wedding

Hart House Restaurant wedding: Setareh + Eliar

The entire wedding of Setareh and Eliar in Hart House Restaurant was fully planned and executed in 2 weeks! The two of them went through numerous changes of dates, formats and locations for their wedding. Thanks Covid! And when they almost settled on an indoor location, the news came in that allowed dancing in outdoor settings! So with only 2 weeks to spare, they decided to move to Hart House! I love that they did it, because it was such a fun party!

I should add that these two not only moved their wedding, they themselves moved to Vancouver from the East Coast during the pandemic! AND they helped out family members by moving another extra couple of times in the period before their wedding. Which in my book makes you two of the kindest people I've met! I'm beyond impressed they made the wedding happen (with help from fairy godmothers Hasti and Sara from Lavista Events ;) ) !

Their day started with a first look and some portraits in the nearby Burnaby Lake Park. Shortly after it was time for the wedding ceremony on the lawn in front of the Hart House Restaurant. Before all the changes, the two of them planned to invite a larger guests list, but thanks to modern technology many people could tune in anyways! Setareh and Eliar arranged a life stream for those who couldn't make it. Their ceremony included both a Western part and a traditional Persian part, which was led by Setareh's dad. It's always extra personal when family members participate in the ceremony. Beautiful!

Thanks to the open sided tent, the reception could take place with plenty of fresh air and ... dancing! I've always enjoyed dance floors, but they are extra precious to me these days, haha. ;) The two of them skipped the first dance and decided to party straight away. And what a party it was!

Thank you so much for having us along on this journey Setareh and Eliar! We had a great time and hope to see you guys out in the interior some day! ;)

Elopement in Squamish

Elopement in Squamish: Sam + Mike

On a beautiful summer day, we joined Sam and Mike for their elopement in Squamish. Summer day, but there's snow in the photos?! Yes, if you go up high enough, there's snow all year round! ;) And that's exactly what these two did! They planned an epic helicopter elopement and a fun day in Squamish!

It was their first time visiting BC and they both looked forward to time off and honeymooning! Mike told us his parents used to go to Whistler for skiing and he heard a lot of stories. I'm very excited they experienced Whistler and so much more during their visit!

The morning of their wedding started off with a first look and exploring the areas around their beautiful cabin in Squamish. Including playing with Tally the dog, little photo bomber. But not for too long, because afterwards we took off for their first ever helicopter flight! Once we arrived at the top it was time for their wedding ceremony! A number of clouds drifted in and for a hot minute I thought we'd have to leave! (Helicopters fly on sight, so clouds are no good.) But luckily the weather changed and we got to enjoy the magnificent views together!

Immediately after the ceremony, Sam and Mike shared their first drink as hubby and wife, followed by a first donut! I loved it, haha, I'd never seen donuts up the mountain before. Great idea!! They also showed us a pose we'd never heard of before. A hard pose. ;) See if you can spot it! Cheers to making things personal!

Next up we visited a couple of nearby fun locations for photos. It felt like a "best of Squamish" trip, with finishing the day at a beautiful viewpoint of the Stawamus Chief (iconic granite monolith). Despite it being quite windy there, Sam and Mike rocked their portraits! We left the two of them knowing they'd have a wedding evening of bbq planned!

Thank you so much for trusting us with your day! We hope you get to enjoy the rest of the summer and that you'll come back to visit more of BC!
