Lynn Canyon engagement: Katie + Andrew
Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver is such a gorgeous location for engagement photos! We were excited to explore the lush forest with Katie and Andrew, who visited all the way from New York! (and even more exciting, they're getting married here soon and we'll be there!) Andrew is originally from Vancouver and Katie from Guam, but the two of them met in San Fransisco and now live in the Big Apple. :) Talking about an international duo!
When first arriving at Lynn Canyon Park, it was clear we wouldn't be all by ourselves, as there were literally busses full of people! Yup, this little area in North Vancouver has seriously grown in popularity over the past couple of years. We can of course hardly blame anyone, as it's such a unique spot with the most gorgeous forest!
Luckily Jelger and I are familiar with the environment and Katie and Andrew were game to follow us to some more calm spots before braving the storm that is the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge. ;) Hey, in the end we did get our 2 minutes without people (after a mere 4 attempts! lol)
My favourite thing about this engagement shoot was the way Katie and Andrew are so incredibly comfortable with each other. They just know each other the way only couples with a deeply rooted understanding do. <3
Something else I really enjoyed was discovering the "roof of moss" which looks just amazing and unlike anything else I've seen in the forest, lol. See if you can find in the photos what I mean! ;)

Cleveland Dam wedding: Linda + Desmond
Linda and Desmond had a full day of events planned, with their wedding ceremony at Cleveland Dam as a special highlight! The two of them fell in love with the beautiful mountain views (how could you not!) and chose to speak their vows witnessed by their family, friends and this epic nature.
In the morning, the festivities started with a traditional tea ceremony, followed by an amazing lunch (roasted pig included!) for their closest family and friends. I'm not going to lie, I'm always super excited when our clients are foodies, heehee. ;) (In case you're wondering, the pig was delicious.)
After Linda changed from her red dress to her white wedding dress, they opted to do a first look. This way the couple could spend some time with their wedding party and take couple photos before the ceremony. This is always a good idea if you don't want to leave your guests alone for too long!
When we arrived at Cleveland Dam, it was just the most beautiful Summer weather and we started with wedding party photos right away! I was extra happy the sunshine, because for their engagement phots they encountered some typical Vancouver weather (aka, grey). So this was a pleasant change! We briefly explored the forest around the Salmon Hatchery too, before we had to head back and they said their I do's.
Quick tip for those of you considering the field at Cleveland Dam for your wedding ceremony: it's a great idea to have chairs set up for your guests! Not only because it's comfortable for them, but also so the tourists know there's an event happening. It's a location that always has a lot of tourists, but with their setup and some help from the planner, Linda and Desmond didn't have any photo bombers during their ceremony. ;)
Afterwards, the wedding reception was certainly foodie worthy with a fantastic multiple course dinner. But what I'll remember most of their party is all the tennis related details (they're both avid players!). The funniest being the sound the guests needed to make if they wanted the couple to kiss! You know that sound someone makes when they hit a tennis ball hard? That's what the guests had to do if they wanted Linda and Desmond to kiss. Hilarious to hear groups of people grunting to see a kiss, hahaha.
Linda and Desmond, you two treated your guests to an unforgettable experience! I'm sure you'll come to visit Cleveland Dam every time you're in Vancouver, what a perfect place to relive wedding memories. :)

Vancouver beach engagement photos: Meagan + Ian
Meagan and Ian joined us at Acadia Beach, a beautiful wild beach in Vancouver, for their engagement photos! These two travelled all the way from Edmonton for their shoot and vacation. I love how Jelger and I meet more and more couple for a "destination engagement shoot". Whether it's in Vancouver or elsewhere, such a fun way to both celebrate your love AND your awesome trip. ;)
We got to spend an hour with this duo, which we divided between "hopping into the forest" and going down to the water. I have to confess that the water brought some surprise for us! While I've been out there at high tide, that day it was SUPER HIGH tide. (is that a thing? ;) )
When you hear "beach engagement photos", you might think about sandy stretches, but not in this part of Vancouver! Acadia Beach is all pebbles and rocks. And instead of those, we were greeted by the water that came right up to the trail! Luckily Meagan and Ian felt adventurous and joined us in climbing on tree trunks and exploring the area in a different way! Nature always has some way to surprise us, hehe. It's part of the fun!

Othello Tunnels hike in Hope
The Othello Tunnels in Hope are one of those locations that everyone has heard of, but for some reason not necessarily visited! Despite living so close to them (it's only a 2 hour drive from Vancouver) and having seen several photographers doing engagement photos there, somehow it took us 7 years. But we finally visited the tunnels.
When we arrived, we first settled in the forest next to the parking lot, because we picked up blueberry muffins and fresh coffee on the way over. Priorities! (aka luxury hiking) We ended up spending a very long time staring at birds in the parking lot. If you look at the photo of that adorable little woodpecker, you'll understand. ;) It doesn't take much to entertain us as soon as there are animals involved. The 3 ravens that were hopping around were definitely equally interesting.
Eventually we walked to the Othello Tunnels, which are part of the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park. The tunnels are very impressive and it's just crazy how they managed to build them over 100 years ago! The canyon itself is equally (if not more!) impressive, with it's high rock walls and beautiful turquoise river.
Because Jelger was wearing his hat (always a good idea in Summer!), we could play Indiana Jones in the tunnels. ;) This place truly is a photography playground, so many fun things you could do! If you're thinking of visiting too, just keep in mind it's a very popular location! We visited in the middle of a Monday and it was busy! Since the park is open from dusk until dawn, my bet would be to either go super early or close to closing time on a late Summer evening. ;)
On the way back home, we made a quick pit stop at Kawkawa Lake, just to satisfy my curiosity about what it looks like, as it is right next to the road. On the map it appeared to be a tiny lake, but it's actually huge! What a beautiful spot for floating around on a boat or just to have a picnic. We'll definitely have to come back and explore bigger hikes in that area!

Stanley Park engagement photos: Titi + Kola
Stanley Park is a location we often visit for weddings and elopements, but this time we got to take engagement photos for Titi and Kola! While their wedding will be in Nigeria, they chose to do their engagement photos in Vancouver. And for that they travelled all the way from Nanaimo and had to endure loooong ferry waits, but they made it! ;)
Titi works in fashion and that certainly showed! I was super impressed with their style throughout the entire shoot. We started off in the Stanley Park Rose Garden, which you could consider a Vancouver classic for engagement photos. But it's certainly a spot that looks different every time!
After that we moved over a bit closer towards the Stanley Park Pavilion, where we photographed Titi and Kola wearing traditional Nigerian outfits. I absolutely loved the colours! So festive and gorgeous! I'd have loved to continue the rest of the shoot with the two of them wearing this, haha, but they had more in store for us with two more outfit changes! What?! Yes, they had 4 outfits! (and now hold our official record of most outfit changes during an engagement shoot) ;)
We continued our adventure along the Seawall with a nice cityscape and ended the day at the Brockton Point Lighthouse, when it started raining! Talking about perfect timing.

Lighthouse Park engagement photos: Gladys + Dan
Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver is one of our favourite locations for engagement photos, so we were excited to visit it again with Gladys and Dan!
You might think we get tired of shooting in the same places, but nothing could be further from the truth! Lighthouse Park is certainly big enough to explore different parts each time we visit. And on top of that we also enjoy the challenge of changing things up. We look at the same spot with different eyes.
After meeting up with Gladys and Dan for a pre shoot drink (in the parking lot, lol, we're classy like that ;) ), off we went to explore the park! We couldn't believe our luck as we had most of the locations by ourselves!
Gladys and Dan started laughing as soon as they looked at each other, lol. I loved it! They brought such a fun energy to the shoot! And photos with laughter are my favourites.
One of the best moments was when the duo brought out Dan's stuffed toy kangaroo that he'd had since he was a kid. It's amazing to bring such a personal item to your shoot. I have to admit I'm generally a bit wary when it comes to props during engagement shoots, because if you bring items that aren't personal or meaningful to you, they have the potential to actually take away from the shoot. But that was definitely not the case here, they hit the nail on the head!
Another favourite moment was Gladys’ and Dan's silly dance on the rocks. Yesssss to dancing on the rocks. ;) And especially when it includes some reflection perfection. Which was pure luck, btw, because the tide has to be low enough and in the perfect spot to see this little pool!

Shaughnessy Restaurant wedding: Jenn + Victor
While we photographed a wedding in VanDusen Botanical Gardens before, this was the first time we had the pleasure of capturing a wedding reception in Shaughnessy Restaurant! It's a venue with a cozy atmosphere and great food! And of course a beautiful view at the gardens outside!
Our day started in Jenn and Victor's apartment, where they got ready and enjoyed a tasty dim sum lunch with their wedding party. All of whom joined us at Queen Elizabeth Park for photos before the ceremony in the pavilion. What a fun group of friends!! The girls on Jenn's side even attempted to climb a tree wearing heels (and kinda failed, but that's ok, lol). And I loved that Victor had groomswomen! While I see this happen a bit more, it's still a small minority of people that chooses "wedding people" vs a more gender based approach. So way to go Victor! :D
After the ceremony, we all headed towards the Shaughnessy Restaurant where Jenn took a short break from her wedding dress (it was hot!) to help set up some decor! She put a lot of DIY effort into the table settings and little details (brave!), with a great end result. :)
Time passed quickly though, and soon it was time for cocktail hour and the start of the wedding reception. One of my favourite moments was Victor's dad's speech, which had everyone laughing. And when we snuck out for a few quick sunset portraits with Jenn wearing her red dress, was another one. The huge trees just across the restaurant were amazing! Yes, I get super happy seeing beautiful trees. ;)
To top it all off, the night ended with a fun dance party!

Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre wedding: Michelle + Connor
We were thrilled to be a part of Michelle and Connor's Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre wedding! While we celebrated in other venues at UBC before, this was the first time we got to join a party there! And what a party it was! The dance floor was jam-packed, so stay tuned for some epic dance photos!
But before talking about the party, the day started with Michelle and Connor getting ready, in this case in different locations. But both had a cute dog present! Michelle and Connor's dog Quinn was with the girls and Quinn's best friend stayed with the guys. ;) Yay for furry friends! It's always fun for me afterwards to see the photos Jelger took, and to see what we were both up to.
UBC Botanical Gardens wedding ceremony
After getting ready, we headed straight into the ceremony, because Michelle and Connor chose not to see each other beforehand. While the forecast seemed a bit threatening, their outdoor ceremony at the UBC Botanical Gardens went smoothly and the umbrellas remained closed. Such a unique ceremony location: they got married under the arbour, with their guests seated in long rows to the sides. But the best part about the entire ceremony was most certainly Connor's face when he saw Michelle walk down the aisle. I'm getting goosebumps while writing this! <3
The rain made a short appearance during the champagne toast after the ceremony, but that was not a problem, because Michelle and Connor rented umbrellas for their guests! After the cocktail hour, we photographed the couple and their wedding party in the UBC Botanical Gardens.
And before heading to the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre for the wedding reception, we made a detour with Michelle and Connor for forest photos in Pacific Spirits Regional Park. I'm very excited they were up for those, because everything looked amazing in the forest! Right after the rain everything smells and looks so fresh! And it's a fitting location for two West Coast lovers. ;)
Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre wedding reception
A unique and fun moment, before the dancing started, was when the couple shared a donut (no cake for these two!). And they chose the best donuts from Cartems, our favourite! (yummmm) Another hilarious moment was when one table sneakily watched the Raptors game on an iPhone. It started with a few people, but quickly evolved to an enthusiastic group. Can you spot the photo? ;)
For their first dance they chose Saturday Sun from Vance Joy (again, very West Coast!), ! I'm just going to leave the link here for you to play while watching their photos. It totally sets the right mood.
After the first dance, we snuck outside for quick sunset photos. My favourite one required me to walk into some slippery pond, because I wanted a reflection photo with flash: totally worth it! I've seldom seen such a beautifully coloured sunset!
And when we returned from the sunset, the party went wild!!! There's not much else to say about it than that this duo has a very enthusiastic partying group of friends and family that clearly loves them very dearly! And after all, isn't that what the best parties are all about. :)

Lynn Canyon elopement: Karly + Mike
We were thrilled to be a part of Karly and Mike's elopement in Lynn Canyon Park. As you might have noticed on our blog, Jelger and I love elopements. And to get to photograph this amazing duo in North Vancouver's lush rain forest: yes please!
When we first arrived at Lynn Canyon, we scouted out some ceremony locations for their elopement away from the suspension bridge. Because beautiful as it is, it's a popular tourist destination making privacy a bit harder to find. My eye caught a spot we hadn't photographed at before. Later on when walking there with Karly, Mike and the officiant, we all agreed that nature had provided us the perfect wedding arch! How amazing is that! ;)
It was especially perfect with this duo's request to photograph "a lot of different trees". Yes please!! I felt extra honoured when they told us they decided on Vancouver because they stumbled upon our blog! How adventurous of them to just take the chance to come out here (for the first time!) and go for it!
After the elopement ceremony (with personal vows that totally moved me) we explored Lynn Canyon with the couple. And yes, this time we did take some photos on the bridge ;). I also may have gone a little crazy with my fern obsession. There are just so many gorgeous ferns, what can I say. Which then led to "bad fern jokes", ferntastic. :P
Karly and Mike are both very creative people. Karly is a professional cook and Mike a science fiction novel writer! (Mike, if you're reading this, when you publish this, I'll link to your book!) And you can tell they're having a lot of fun together. It's a special feeling when we're allowed to take a peak into a couple's dynamic and when they go all out in front of the camera. It's a vulnerable place to go to, so I'm very grateful for that. <3
We ended their elopement photos at Lynn Canyon's 30 feet rock pool, with its gorgeous green water. If you're brave, you can take a plunge, but it's cold! (no, they were in wedding attire, we didn't go there, lol) Afterwards the two of them enjoyed a couple more days in Vancouver before flying back to the East Coast.

Rocky Point Park engagement photos: Lisa + Dave
I was super excited when Lisa and Dave chose Rocky Point Park for their engagement photos. For purely selfish reasons, I should add, haha, because: ice cream!!! Which is exactly how we ended the night. ;)
But first, let me start with how we met Lisa! We're both part of the same gym (Madlab, I highly recommend this place) and I knew Lisa as "that strong girl", because she can deadlift A LOT! Yessss for strong women! She's not just strong, but also smart, which is a good thing when your fiancé is an astrophysicist. When we met David, it was clear right away that they have such a strong bond! They've got that vibe of a couple that knows each other through and through.
Back to Rocky Point Park, where we met up for the start of their engagement photos in Yellow Dog Brewing! It was my first time at the brewery and I loved the atmosphere! Port Moody is clearly making a serious effort putting the city on the map with great micro breweries. I'm definitely going back there! (Jelger, will you be my designated driver?!)
When we explored the park, we found gorgeous trees as well as some beautiful beach areas with mountains in the background! Please beware that some of the "beach" is actually swampy mud and that it's a good idea to test things first. ;) Later on, when we approached the park's pier, an overly enthusiastic singer with a microphone serenaded all the passerbys. Lisa told us he reminded her of Italy. ;)
I also love how Lisa brought a scarf (chunni) and included a true Bollywood moment in their engagement photos as a wink to her Fijian heritage. So fun! And after a gorgeous sunset we all went to Rocky Point Ice Cream! This was definitely our first engagement shoot ever with beers AND ice cream. :)

Golden Ears Park elopement: Katie + John
Katie and John flew all the way from Gainesville, Florida for their elopement in Golden Ears Park! Katie's sister and her partner from Brooklyn joined them for the occasion, what an international gathering! The 4 of them had hiked in the provincial park the day before the elopement (despite the rain!) and they loved our epic West Coast nature! It was also smart of them to book an airbnb close to Golden Ears, which might not be a visitor's first idea when flying in, but it’s certainly amazing for a few days of hiking!
On the day of the elopement, the weather cooperated wonderfully: no more rain, woohoo! And because it was one of the first days with longer opening hours of the park in April, we had the entire beach to ourselves. Which worked out perfectly for their first look! I am impressed with Katie and John's willpower not to cheat, haha. They shared the same car driving to Golden Ears, but didn't look at each other at all! They first saw each other in the middle of the beach, surrounded by epic mountains.
Katie's sister officiated the ceremony, which was so personal and beautiful! She's a woman of many talents as she also created the bouquet and boutonnière with artificial flowers and paper. The bouquet included a paper flower made of pages from a Harry Potter book! It's not only awesome because Katie gets to keep the bouquet, but she could take it on the plane.
After their ceremony I got to photograph the two of them on a rock surrounded by water, which made me extra excited! In the past when visiting Golden Ears Park for elopements, for some reason that rock was always "off limits". Either because of the crowds or because of a film crew out there etc. So that totally rocked! (yes, I went there ;)).
During their photo shoot, we learned about the alligators in Florida, and the fact that Katie snatched one out of a river with bare hands! She's a vet, so it's ok. ;) And John mentioned the huge amount of peacocks in their hometown (what?!)! Some of which may or may not be "dangerous". I might have to visit the place and find out for myself.
We finished off our time together with local brews they brought. The perfect start for them, as they planned to visit a lot of local breweries during the rest of their travels in Vancouver.

Robson Square and Barnet Marine Park elopement: Yakeline + Phillip
Yakeline and Phillip had their elopement ceremony at Love In The Square, continued the celebration with portraits in Barnet Marine Park and ended the night at Dageraad Brewing in Burnaby with their closest friends and relatives.
But before I get into all those details, I want to take the time to congratulate this duo and give an extra big thumbs up to Yakeline. She moved countries to be with her now husband Phillip. I think this is so brave! Especially since living in Vancouver wasn't something she planned beforehand. She followed her gut feeling, chose love and did it anyways!
When we met up with the two of them, they told us Love In The Square was perfect for them: a fun and spontaneous way of getting married. In case you don't know Love In The Square, it’s an initiative where couples elope for free, with a donation of $20 to the food bank. Last year I (Tanja) volunteered at the event where 150 couples tied the knot. This year I participated in the project for 2 hours. So I was extra happy I got to photograph Yakeline and Phillip's ceremony.
The Barnet Marine Park elopement
Later in the afternoon, Jelger joined me for family photos and couple portraits at Barnet Marine Park. I LOVE how sweet and playful these two were together. Especially considering the fact that it was actually freezing cold and they braved it all with smiles on their faces. :)
Because of their shared love for craft beer, Dageraad Brewing was the perfect spot for a relaxed dinner at night! We're slightly biased towards this brewery, because they brew Belgian style beers (the best style, obviously! ;)). Yakeline added so many cute personal touches to the decor and food she prepared! Her guests loved it.

Whytecliff Park engagement photos: Linda + Desmond
Linda and Desmond chose for a true "Vancouver classic" for their engagement photos: the gorgeous Whytecliff Park! While it certainly wasn't our first time photographing there, I love how each time the park looks different and we keep discovering new nooks and crannies. Of course it also helped that this duo climbed on the rocks with us, which allowed us to play with new perspectives. :)
The day of the shoot was a typical Vancouver grey day, with a bit of a "threat of rain". The plus side of that was that we had Whytecliff Park almost entirely to ourselves! (which is rare!) Although we did have an audience of adorable and noisy sea lions. I'm sure they were there to cheer us on. ;) And of course many seagulls joined the party.
One of the reasons I love Whytecliff Park so much for engagement photos is the rocky pebble beach. While it makes it a bit less convenient to hop around barefoot, it creates a distinct feeling of "wild nature". The many logs that washed ashore only add to that vibe. Add some mountains in the background et voila: West Coast perfection. :) Apparently it's also a gorgeous place for divers, as a big group of them arrived just as we were wrapping up our shoot. (but that'd be a whole new level of engagement photos, lol)
Linda and Desmond live in Edmonton and are getting married in Vancouver. They're tackling the brave task of planning from a distance, hehe. I'm honoured they flew in for their engagement photos during this process!

Whytecliff Park elopement: Jennifer + Brigette
A couple of weeks ago, Jelger and I had the honour of photographing and being witnesses at Jennifer and Brigette's elopement in Whytecliff Park!
The two of them flew all the way from New Orleans to Vancouver to get married! Isn't it extra adventurous to fly to a city you've never visited before and to plan your wedding there? Jennifer and Brigette love to travel together, so a destination elopement was perfect for the two of them. Although, I should really say the three of them, because they're going to be parents soon! :)
I can't believe how crafty Brigette was, btw! The night before their elopement, she purchased some supplies in Michaels and flowers and cake in Safeway. With all that, she created both their bouquets, her beautiful flower crown and some cute props!
Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver is such a unique location (and perfect for an adventurous elopement)! I have to confess that living here, sometimes makes me forget about these "everyday spots". But when photographing in the park, I'm in awe every time! And Jennifer and Brigette chose a ceremony location we hadn't seen before, with a great view of the Bowen Island Mountains and Howe Sound. Epic mountain views!
After an hour (which flew by!) we said our goodbyes and the two of them enjoyed the rest of their day together.

Stanley Park elopement: Jen + Robin
Jen and Robin's timing for their Stanley Park elopement couldn't have been more perfect! If you're familiar with Stanley Park, you know there's only a brief window of time each year to admire the beautiful cherry blossoms in the Rose Garden. And guess where Jen and Robin had their first look... ;) It was absolutely stunning! But regardless of the blossoms, Robin's reaction was the best about the whole scene. He kept looking at Jen with the same admiration throughout the rest of the day. :)
I'm extra happy they got to witness Stanley Park at its best, because they flew to Vancouver from Calgary for their elopement! And both of their moms and Jen's sister and partner joined them. Not that the park is not beautiful when it's raining, lol, but sunshine definitely feels better, lol.
Jen was game for a little walk on the beach after their first look! I always love when a bride isn't afraid of getting her dress a little dirty. ;) Also kudos for Robin braving some rocks with dressed (slippery) shoes. It was definitely worth it, because somehow the beach looked extra West Coasty that day. Don't you love how this is in Vancouver, but it looks like you're on some wild beach in the middle of nowhere?
Jelger and I enjoyed the ceremony, officiated by Laura! She offered everyone (including Jelger and I) a rescue remedy candy at the beginning of the ceremony and took her time to create a very peaceful energy. Getting married in the forest has a specific vibe. There's truly nothing like it.
I wanted to share this little part of Jen and Robin's ceremony, that I felt touched by. All of us in a relationship can relate to it and it's so important to take a moment and reflect.
"May your love deepen and be a never-ending source of strength for you both, especially when life gets tough. May you continue to stand for each other, even when the other pushes you away. And may you continue to recognize the humour in the silly made-up words, and the humble, honest and quiet qualities that mean so much to you today. "
